After my older brother threw a pipe wrench through a window at my birth-parent’s home in the early 1970s, I’ve felt a constant yearning for home ever since. My parents divorced and relocated to Massachusetts when I was just three and from then on it was just me and my dad. He was a truck driver, and though the family only lived in one place for most of my childhood, my parents made sure we had a good few moves with them in the breaks.

One of the biggest surprises I remember of my childhood was when I was allowed to watch a Disney movie in the theater. I was eight at the time, and I recall being really emotional and shy when the lights went out for the film and the screen began to glow. The movie was “The Black Hole” (1979). It had a screenplay written by Leonard Maloney, long before I even existed. Some of the words in the title felt like metaphors for me, as if there were some kind of invisible, black hole sucking me away from my home. Looking back on it now, it’s sort of hard to believe how much all the family-friendliness felt like a system of protection and a way for my parents to force me into adulthood.

I’m a 27-year-old artist living in Rhode Island and I’ve begun to think of ways to escape the permanent state of migration that has burdened me throughout my life. In the first place, I’ve begun to compose images that allude to a sense of having found somewhere “home”. It’s too soon to look at the images in their completed state, but I have been working on them for about a year now. I’ve been spending a lot of time in a small Rhode Island city that is rural in some ways and has a population of about 150,000. In the city, you’ll find service jobs, old buildings, and a rich architectural history. Outside the city, there’s more of a sense of the geography and wilderness. I’ve been walking and riding bikes in the woods and through town, tracking which places are the center of my home.

One of the places that feels like the center is a farm house owned by a friend of mine who I met through mutual friends. The house has a small yard with two apple trees and a swing. It has a small porch where some of my friends like to sit

If you’re between 15 and 60 years old, you’ll know that the website Vans is one of your absolute favourite places on the internet. The skate-wear company has brought its unprecedented culture of freedom and creativity to the world of mass-produced shoe styles, creating shoes that can be worn by anyone, everywhere, and designed by anyone. That’s why, on Thursday, Vans announced that they would be revealing their first ever collection of footwear dedicated to young adults.

As they write on their website, the aim of the collection is “to celebrate the spirit, style, and freedom that define what it means to be young at heart”. This means that, instead of traditional models, the new collection consists of two new silhouettes: the “UPF Fly” and the “UPF Sock”.

And now, to demonstrate the versatility of the “UPF” line, we’ve put together a look, featuring two of the new footwear models. We’ve paired the slip-on “UPF Fly” with a smooth crewneck shirt, matching suede jacked with cargo shorts, and then we’ve used the chunky “UPF Sock” to complete the ensemble, with a pair of waxed sneakers.Larissa Bolotova
