# Chapter 2. This Is Photoshop

> « Design is a life-or-death game. Either you win or you learn to play again. »
> _Jacqueline Carey_

This is Photoshop.

You can do more than just whip out a picture of a tree and crop it to remove unwanted portions and stuff it into a frame; you can manipulate it into almost any image you can imagine. The possibilities with Photoshop are endless.

This chapter starts off by describing the main features of the program. Then we discuss key aspects of the interface, including the workspace and toolbars, choosing what menus you want to see, and how to save and export your work. This brings us to a

Photographers may also want to try similar tools as part of Lightroom, which can be operated through a similar interface. PSE is less powerful and has less advanced features than Lightroom, but it is still a useful tool for anyone who wants a more affordable alternative to Photoshop.

Photoshop Elements is not an alternative to Photoshop. It has a different interface and its capabilities are not complete as Photoshop. If you are interested in learning how to edit images, explore and start using the elements of Photoshop Elements. If you’re looking for a more powerful tool like Photoshop, you can use Elements as a lower cost alternative to PSE.

What is Photoshop Elements?

Adobe Photoshop Elements (PSE) is an easy-to-use photo-editing program for beginners and hobbyists. You can use it to edit, adjust, or create new images from scratch. PSE only offers low-cost alternatives to the more common features in Photoshop, and it is often the first step in learning how to edit images.

Compared to Photoshop, PSE has fewer filters and tools. However, it has a simplified interface and a smaller learning curve, which makes it easy to use. It’s also a cheaper option compared to Photoshop.

When compared to Photoshop, the main features included in PSE are:

Basic photo editing with adjustment tools

Adjustment layers and masking

Change multiple photographs into one

Adjust basic colors and contrast

Apply and change background color

Create and save PDF documents from pictures

The following features are included in PSE:

Adjust basic colors

Adjust contrast, brightness and shadows

Create high-quality print-ready images, or use them as an online wallpaper

Create or edit PDF files

Save digital files or save as JPG, PNG, TIFF, PSD and PDF files

Add titles, captions, watermarks, or special effects to photographs

Merge similar images into one

Most of these features are available in both versions of Photoshop. If you have Photoshop, you may be able to use many of these features with just a little training and practice. Photoshop Elements adds some helpful features that make the editing process quicker and easier.

You can also use Photoshop Elements to convert and edit files from other photo-editing applications.

The Healing Brush uses the information on an image to decide what it needs to be repaired by blending the surrounding pixels with the information from the area that needs to be repaired.
The Pen Tool (pen) is an extremely useful tool for sketching or drawing on an image. It can be used to make selections, create shapes, and do more.
The Spot Healing Brush lets you replace a very small damaged area with a similar area.
The Gradient Tool lets you create subtle and dramatic transitions between one color and another.
A Smudge Tool smears the pixels in an area. Use it to remove artifacts or touch up an image.
Vectors are special shapes and lines that Photoshop understands and makes easy to modify.
The Gradient Tool lets you create smooth, subtle, and dramatic transitions between colors or patterns.
The Blur and Sharpen Tools can be used to add or remove contrast.
The Liquify tool is one of the most versatile tools in Photoshop. Liquify gives you the power to manipulate objects within an image. It can be used to straighten objects, distort and move them, or use its settings to edit the individual pixels of an object.
The Eraser Tool is used to remove areas of an image. Use it to clean up unwanted areas or to erase unwanted areas.
The Spot Healing Brush is used to fix small areas of an image. It is similar to the Healing Brush, but using the information on the surrounding pixels, the Spot Healing Brush is able to detect where the pixel needs to be fixed.
The Spot Healing Brush lets you fix small areas of a damaged image. It does this by merging pixels from the surrounding area of the image with the pixels in the damaged area.
The Magic Wand Tool is a selection tool that works by setting a specific color or pattern as a first target. Pixels that are similar in color or pattern are then automatically selected.
The Eraser Tool allows you to remove areas of a photo. Since most photos have more than one subject, the Eraser Tool is used to remove unwanted areas of the image and leave a clean subject.
The Pen Tool can be used to create lines or sketches on an image. You can select different colors and patterns, and it will make them look like they’re painted on your photo.
The Selection Brush is used to paint an area of an image. It can be used to select a specific area of an image and paint into that area.
The Gradient Tool lets you create subtle,

What’s New in the Photoshop 2021 (Version 22.2)?

-de.service is a shell script.
Mr__: I’ve never seen one with a service file before, but I’d be tempted to just see what process it ran as and double check that just using ps or top
Mr__: might also be worth grepping /proc/cmdline
Yeah, that’s what I’d expect. So, are the top processes i.e. foreground processes named? I don’t really have a command line debugger installed on this system.
Those just point to top I presume.
The service file is 545 bytes long.
And I don’t think –inmem and –wait require a shell wrapper? If they don’t, you’d be removing their ability to run from a service.
Mr__: yeah, the top processes on the system are displayed in the ‘columns’ view of top, rather than just a list
Yeah, that’s what I’m using. But, I was hoping to know if I could just grep the running processes?
Mr__: ps auwx | grep running_process_name
waltman: Thanks.
(that grep command didn’t even work)
It should work, it just might not be unique enough. I’m betting your top shows you some cpython which isn’t running all the time?
ps uaxw */* shows a few processes that I assume are the python-specific processes like import *, __path__, etc.
I think the grep also worked.
Did that find what you expected?
I have a few miscellaneous python processes
There are a few python-* processes
And, ps uaxw */python* also shows a few of the running python processes
I think the python process number in the list might be useful for identifying it by that number only, but I’m not really sure.
Yeah, I’m going to have to do that. Thanks for the help.
